No. 9 Hobart defeats 10th-ranked Lakers

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team lost 5-2 to Hobart at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday night. Both teams are nationally ranked in the most recent USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, as Hobart is ninth and the Lakers are 10th.

The victory was Hobart's seventh-straight victory to start the season, and the Statesmen are a perfect 7-0-0 on the year. Oswego State fell to 4-3-1 on the year, with all three losses on home ice at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Hobart took a quick lead, scoring just 56 seconds into the game on Bryant Harris' first goal of the season. The Statesmen added a power-play goal late in the first period to extend the advantage to two goals.

Shawn Houdle capitalized on an Oswego State defensive giveaway in the first minute of the second period and scored on a breakaway to make the score 3-0.

The Lakers finally got on the board at 15:32 of the second with Peter Magagna's third goal of the year, assisted by Ryan Ellis and Rich Zalewski.

Hobart's Patrick Moriarty re-established the three-goal advantage with his third goal of the season on a deflection from Matthew Wallace's shot from the right wing.

Oswego State controlled play throughout the third period and pressed to tie the score, and got a goal back on a deflection by Josh Chamberlain in the high slot on a shot by Mark Lozzi. It was Chamberlain's first collegiate goal.

The Lakers outshot Hobart 18-10 in the third period but got no closer, and Hobart added a late score by Kirk Golden to account for the 5-2 win.

Ryan Scott made 24 saves in the loss, and Hobart junior goalie Keith Longo made 41 saves and earned his fourth win of the year.

Oswego State returns to action on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 when they host a SUNYAC weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
