The Oswego State men's hockey team lost 4-2 to rival Plattsburgh on Friday night at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.
The Lakers are now winless in three games to start the season with an 0-2-1 record, and the loss in their SUNYAC opener has them at 0-1-0 in conference play.
Plattsburgh extended its winning streak to four games, and is 4-0-0 on the year. All of the games were SUNYAC contests.
The Cardinals got out to a lead in the first period after winning a face off in the Oswego State zone. Riley Hill collected the puck and shot through traffic past Oswego State goalie Ryan Scott 4:11 into the period. Kyle VanDermale and Mike Thomson assisted.
The Lakers tied the score late in the first during a 5-on-3 power play. Peter Magagna passed to Neil Musselwhite in the high slot and Musselwhite's shot went in off the right post past Plattsburgh goalie Bryan Hince.
Plattsburgh scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. The first goal was scored by Ward Smith, his third of the year, as an Oswego State penalty expired. The Cardinals tallied again when the puck was kept in at the blue line and a long pass from Nick Rolls found Dylan Clarke open at the edge of the crease.
An early goal in the third period for the Lakers gave Oswego State momentum. Ryan Ellis was credited with the goal, his second of the year, after a point shot from Kyle McCutcheon deflected in off of Ellis' shoulder pads. Tyler Lyon also earned an assist on the play.
Hince stood tall in the third period, making nine saves and Plattsburgh killed off two third-period penalties before Hill scored an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left to seal the victory.
Ryan Scott made 25 saves for Oswego State and Hince finished with 25 saves for the Cardinals. Oswego State will host Potsdam on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
