The Oswego State women's basketball team defeated Brockport 66-61 in overtime in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament on Friday evening at Cortland's Corey Gymnasium.
The Lakers jumped out to a quick five-point lead in the overtime as Jessica Collins scored inside and Kelly Mraz knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Lakers ahead 59-54. The Lakers also made five foul shots in the extra period to seal the victory.
Three Oswego State players scored in double figures led by Mraz with 14 points. Samantha Driscoll scored 12 and Lyndsey Marquit had 10. Jessica Tremblay was Oswego State's leading rebounder with nine boards, and the Lakers held Brockport to 34.3 percent shooting in the contest.
The Lakers trailed early in the early part of the first half, but a 21-6 run gave the Lakers a 30-21 lead.
Oswego State led by 10 on two occasions early in the second half, but Brockport clawed its way back into the game and it was close down the stretch. The Lakers made just six field goals in the second half but head coach Michelle Collins credited the team's defense and rebounding for keeping it in the game.
"We played great defense in the second half," Collins said. "We kept our poise and didn't panic, and finally started to take the ball to the basket and get to the free-throw line."
Brockport shot just 3-for-25 from behind the 3-point arc in the game, and was 1-for-13 in the second half and overtime. Benlyn Campbell led Brockport with 21 points and Ashley Broadhurst scored 11.
Oswego State is now 19-7 on the year and will play in the SUNYAC Championship game for the third consecutive year. The Lakers will face top-seeded Cortland in the 4 p.m. title game on Saturday at Cortland.
