Laker comeback falls short in overtime loss

For the second time in a week, a women's basketball tournament semifinal game between Brockport and Oswego State featured an impressive comeback and was sent to overtime. This time around, unlike the SUNYAC semifinal, Brockport won the overtime contest 61-55 and advanced to the ECAC Upstate Tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers trailed 31-11 in the first half but ended the opening 20 minutes strongly, with a 12-2 run and reduced the deficit to 10 points in the first half. Last week in the SUNYAC semifinals, Brockport rallied from a big deficit to force overtime, but Oswego State won that game.

The key stretch of the game came in the middle of the second half, when Oswego State held Brockport to just three points in a stretch of 10 minutes and turned a 40-32 deficit into a 47-43 lead.

The teams traded baskets down the stretch and missed some opportunities. A right-wing jumper by Brockport's Kim Schon with 1:32 left gave Brockport a 53-51 advantage but Sarah Lombard answered with a layup at the other end for Oswego State on an assist from Kelly Mraz to tie the game.

Brockport missed jump shots on two possessions in the final minute, and the Lakers turned the ball over on another trip with 20 seconds left in regulation.

A three-point play by Brockport's Brenlyn Campbell put the Golden Eagles ahead 56-53 but Heather Merino scored on a jump shot with 2:13 left and reduced the deficit to one point. An offensive rebound and put back by Kiomi Matthews restored Brockport's three-point lead and they held on down the stretch for the win as Oswego State's shooting went cold.

Jessica Tremblay led a balanced Laker scoring attack with 13 points. Samantha Driscoll added nine points and Lyndsey Marquit, Kelly Mraz, and Sarah Lombard had eight points each.

The Lakers ended the season with a 20-9 record, and the senior class of Kelly Mraz, Jessica Tremblay, Lyndsey Marquit, and Lacey Kimpland finished their careers as the most successful graduating class in Oswego State women's basketball history.
