Oswego State comes back to defeat Fredonia

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team used late rallies in both the first and second half to turn the game around, en route to a 12-10 victory over visiting Fredonia at Laker Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lakers trailed 7-5 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half, but scored three straight goals to close the first half and take an 8-7 lead. Fredonia battled back to take a 10-9 lead in the second half, with 12:55 remaining, but Oswego State scored the last three goals of the contest to earn a SUNYAC win.

Oswego State is now 5-7 overall and 2-4 in SUNYAC games, while Fredonia fell to 6-6 and 1-4 in the conference.

Oswego State freshman Rachel Ventresca scored three of her four goals in the first half, including two goals in the closing minutes to put the Lakers in front at halftime. Fredonia regained the lead with 12:55 left on a goal by Nicole VanEtten, but the Lakers kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

Ashley Andersen scored the game-tying goal with 12:23 left, and Nicole McHale put Oswego State ahead with a goal with 11:07 left. Ventresca capped her day by scoring the final goal of the game with six seconds left.

Andersen, McHale, and Andrea Poor all had two goals for Oswego State. Meghan Dooney had a goal and an assist, and Jessica Maltese also had a goal. Tricia McNeilly and Alisha Sarubbi had assists, and Shannon O'Brien had six saves.

Fredonia goalie Sarah Wright had 12 saves, and Christie Zaganiaczyk had five goals in the game. Carrie Halstead had two goals and two assists for the Blue Devils, and VanEtten, Rebecca Erlichman, and Leslie Von Pless had one goal each.

The Lakers host Buffalo State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
