The Oswego State baseball team defeated Oneonta 2-0 behind a complete-game, six-hit shutout from starting pitcher
Nate DeSantis in the first round of the ECAC Upstate Tournament on Friday afternoon at Oneonta.
The Lakers, seeded fourth, defeated the top-seed and host Red Dragons. It was Oswego State's third win this year against Oneonta. The Lakers will play against St. John Fisher in a winner's bracket game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In Friday's win, the Lakers scored twice in the top of the first and the runs stood up the rest of the way behind an excellent outing from DeSantis. Brett Shaffer led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Perioli. Nick Marzullo singled to advance Shaffer to third, and Tom Farrell followed with an RBI single that brought in Shaffer and advanced Marzullo to second. Justin White had the Lakers' third straight hit and Marzullo scored from second when the left fielder made an error on the play. A pop out and a strike out ended the inning.
DeSantis limited the damage on the day by allowing just six hits, three walks, and hit one batter with a pitch. The Lakers erased an attempted base-stealer in the first, picked off runners in the second and fifth, and turned a double play in the ninth to damper a last-inning comeback bid. DeSantis struck out seven batters.
Farrell and Marzullo finished with two hits each for Oswego State and Dan Pecora had a double.
The winner of Saturday's game against St. John Fisher will advance directly to Sunday's 11 a.m. championship game. The loser of Saturday's game will play against the winner of the loser's bracket game between RIT and Oneonta. St. John Fisher defeated RIT 9-2 earlier Friday.
