Lakers lose SUNYAC final to Plattsburgh

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team lost 4-3 to Plattsburgh on Saturday night in the SUNY Athletic Conference championship game at Plattsburgh's Stafford Ice Arena.

The Lakers got off to a great start when Derrell Levy scored on a slapshot from the high slot just 10 seconds into the first period on an assist from Rich Zalewski. That 1-0 lead held up for the rest of the period as the Lakers killed off three minor penalties.

The Cardinals answered in the second, scoring three times including twice on the power play. Dylan Clarke tied the game with a goal on a deflection, and Ryan Corry scored on the power play to put Plattsburgh in front 2-1.

Oswego State faced a full two-minute 5-on-3 short-handed situation and killed it off, then Brendan McLaughlin and Peter Magagna exited the box and created an odd-man rush that McLaughlin finished in front to tie the score.

Plattsburgh's Joey Wilson got a power-play marker to put the Cardinals back in front late in the second.

The Cardinals got an insurance goal from Shawn Dennis with 10 minutes left in the third, but Oswego State answered on McLaughlin's second goal of the night. They couldn't get the game-tying goal as the Cardinal defense held tight and tournament MVP Bryan Hince finished the game with 23 saves.

McLaughlin, Francois Gagnon, and Tony DiNunzio were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team for Oswego State. Laker goalie Ryan Scott made 41 saves in the game.

Oswego State is now 18-6-2 on the season and awaits word next Sunday on a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Three of Oswego State's six losses have come against Plattsburgh, ranked second in the nation by the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll. Plattsburgh is 23-4-0.
