The Oneonta Red Dragons dominated the middle portion of the game and went on to 19-9 win over Oswego State in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.
It was the SUNYAC opener for both teams, and Oneonta improved its record to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Lakers saw a two-game winning streak snapped and are now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.
The game was tied 2-2 after the first 16 minutes of play, but the visitors from Oneonta closed the first half with a 5-1 run. Rosemarie Fazio and Kristin O'Leary scored back-to-back goals for the Red Dragons before Michelle MenDell answered for the Lakers. Three more tallies before halftime, coming from the sticks of Michelle Symons, Brianne Ruzek, and Erica Krisak gave Oneonta a 7-3 lead at the half.
The scoring spree continued in the second half, with the Red Dragons tallying six of the first seven goals to build a convincing advantage. Krisak scored just 26 seconds into the half and Oneonta never looked back.
Michelle MenDell scored four goals for Oswego State in the loss, and Rachel Ventresca added two goals for the Lakers. Ashley Andersen, Colleen Ventura, and Jessica Zenzel also tallied for the Lakers. Alisha Sarubbi and Zenzel each had two assists. Shannon O'Brien made 13 saves in goal.
Ruzek's four-goal performance led Oneonta. Krisak and Kristin O'Leary each scored three goals, and Symons, Katie O'Toole, and Michelle Arket scored twice each. Oneonta goalie Eileen O'Toole had eight saves.
The Lakers will play their next three games on the road, beginning Saturday at Morrisville. Oswego State's next home game is Friday, April 11 against St. Lawrence.
