The Oswego State baseball team defeated visiting Plattsburgh 16-0 in the opening game of a SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon and lost the second game 10-3.
The Lakers are now 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh is 8-14 and 4-4 in the conference.
Oswego State 16, Plattsburgh 0
The Lakers jumped all over Plattsburgh starter Craig Bujold with three two-out RBI hits from Mike Levy, K.C. Reardon, and Matt Deveney which led to four first-inning runs. Oswego State added three more in the second inning on a three-run double by Josh Stoetzel. All three runs were credited to Bujold.
The Lakers broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Bujold was chased in the second inning and Billy Davis and Corey Johnston worked the second and third and combined to allow seven runs.
Wes O'Connor and Matt Deveney each had two-run singles in the third inning.
Dave Widrick went the distance for the Lakers, earning the complete-game shutout. He allowed eight hits and walked nobody, with three strikeouts and the Lakers turned three double plays in the contest.
O'Connor led the way with four hits, four runs, and two RBIs. Stoetzel and Evan Shaffer were each 3-for-4 and Mike Levy, K.C. Reardon, Matt Deveney, and Dan Pecora had two hits each in the 21-hit Laker attack.
Plattsburgh 10, Oswego State 3
A six-run outburst by Plattsburgh in the top of the sixth broke open a close game and gave the Cardinals a split of the twinbill.
Plattsburgh went ahead with two runs in the top of the second inning but the Lakers tied it in the bottom half on a single by Matt Deveney and an error on the right fielder that brought in two runs. Plattsburgh took the lead again in the fourth on a pair of two-out hits by John Campbell and Kevin Gent.
Cardinals starter Dan Noonan earned the win working four and a third innings and Craig Bujold pitched the last two and two-thirds to get the save.
P.J. Cowie took the loss for Oswego State in relief of starter Marc Peterson.
