Big second half leads Geneseo to win over Lakers

The Oswego State women's lacrosse team was held off the scoreboard for the last 27 minutes of the game and lost 15-8 to Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.

Geneseo improved to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the SUNY Athletic Conference, while Oswego State is now 5-8 and 2-3 in the conference.

The Lakers rallied from an early 7-2 deficit to score five of the last six goals of the first half an pulled to within a one-goal deficit at halftime, trailing 8-7. Seniors Alisha Sarubbi, Ashley Andersen, and Michelle MenDell all had goals in the Laker run, and Oswego State was back in the game.

Early in the second half, Geneseo's Shauna Leonard and Oswego State's MenDell each scored a goal to make the score 9-8 in favor of the visiting Blue Knights, and that was the end of the scoring for Oswego State.

The Blue Knights scored the last six goals of the game, and kept the Lakers off the board for the final 27:14. Geneseo goalie Hannah McKee made seven saves in the game, and Oswego State's Shannon O'Brien had 17 saves.

Leonard scored six goals for Geneseo and had one assist. Laura Kitts and Maggie Morris each had three goals, and Lauren Burgoon had two goals for the Blue Knights.

Oswego State was led by Michelle MenDell with three goals, and Ashley Andersen with two goals. Sarubbi, Colleen Ventura, and Jessica Zenzel had one goal each. Rachel Ventresca had three assists.

Prior to the game, Oswego State's five seniors were honored. They are Ashley Andersen, Mary Felice, Michelle MenDell, Alisha Sarubbi, and Susannah Taylor. The Lakers play at home against Brockport on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
