Plattsburgh sweeps Lakers on softball diamond

The Oswego State softball team dropped a pair of SUNY Athletic Conference games against Plattsburgh on Friday afternoon in Oswego. The visiting Cardinals won the first game 4-2 and the second game 7-0.

The Cardinals improved to 25-11 on the season and 15-3 in the SUNYAC, while Oswego State dropped back below .500 at 15-16 and are now 10-10 in the conference. The Lakers host Potsdam for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lakers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer by Sarah Castaldo, but Plattsburgh answered in the top of the fifth when Andrea Stupp singled, and pinch-runner Kelly Combs came in to score on a sacrifice and a pair of wild pitches.

The Cardinals scored three unearned runs in th top of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Erin Jamieson. The Lakers got a solo homer from Erin Armstrong in the bottom of the seventh, and had the tying run at the plate when Sarah Castaldo stepped up with two outs, but Jaclyn Leitze came in relief of Zweig and recorded the final out to earn the save.

Zweig finished with eight strikeouts and allowed the pair of solo homers among nine total hits for the Lakers. Jackson took the loss, pitching the complete game but allowing just one earned run. She had six strikeouts.

Plattsburgh 7, Oswego State 0
The Cardinals scored a single run in the top of the first and another in the fifth, and added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh in the victory. Leitze earned the complete-game shutout, allowing just two Laker hits in the game, which were delivered by Kelly Cooper and Tracey Snow. Leitze had 10 strikeouts and walked none.

Erika Ayers pitched for Oswego State and limited Plattsburgh's damage until the seventh, and the Laker defense committed four errors. Nicole Diemer and Andrea Stupp each had three hits for Plattsburgh in the game.
