Lakers wrap up SUNYAC regular season with pair of wins

The Oswego State softball team defeated Potsdam in both games of a SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Oswego. The Lakers won the first game 5-1 and the second game 4-0.

The Lakers finished their SUNYAC season with a 12-10 conference record and currently stand in sixth place. The top six teams qualify for the conference tournament, but Geneseo and Oneonta sit right behind the Lakers and can still pass Oswego State in the standings. Oswego State is 17-16 overall and has a pair of non-league doubleheaders scheduled this week, hosting Utica on Monday and traveling to Union on Tuesday.

Potsdam is 6-26 overall and 2-18 in the conference.

Ashley Mead started things off with a single in the bottom of the first as part of a 3-for-4 game at the plate in the opener. She came in to score on an RBI hit by Jill Burns as a part of a two-run first inning. Oswego State added a run in the second on a sac fly RBI by Burns that scored Melissa Ryan.

Mead and Ryan added RBIs in the bottom of the sixth to round out the Laker scoring. Erin Armstrong had a double for the Lakers. Potsdam's run came in the seventh when Molly Flynn doubled to bring in Lacey Malbeuf.

Michelle Jackson was the winning pitcher for Oswego State and Megan Strough took the loss for the Bears.

Oswego State broke through with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth as Colleen Carmon singled in pinch-runner Keri Starr, who ran for Erin Armstrong after Armstrong reached base on an error. Two more runs in the fifth inning came courtesy of a two-run homer by Erin Tracy, and another run in the sixth accounted for the final.

Michelle Jackson pitched all seven innings and earned the victory, allowing two hits, no walks, and striking out eight batters.
