Cortland pitching shuts down Lakers in doubleheader sweep

The Oswego State baseball team played its home-opening doubleheader on Saturday against Cortland, dropping the first game 11-0 and the second game by a 6-0 count at Laker Field in Oswego.

Oswego State fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in SUNY Athletic Conference games. The Red Dragons are now 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers host a SUNYAC doubleheader Sunday against Fredonia, beginning at noon.

Cortland 11, Oswego State 0
Cortland pitcher Matt Tone threw a complete-game no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the opening game of the day. He walked five Lakers and hit one with a pitch, as they were the only six baserunners of the game for the Lakers.

The Red Dragons eventually got on the board with a run in the fifth, and they added four in the sixth to break the game open. Jason Simone, Matt Vitalone, and Khyle Dimino all had two hits in the game.

Dave Widrick was the starting pitcher, and took the loss for the Lakers.

Cortland 6, Oswego State 0
The Red Dragons completed the sweep with two runs in the top of the first and four in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from P.J. Merriweather.

Oswego State had two hits, singles by Josh Stoetzel and Mike Levy.

Cortland starting pither Mike Assmann went five and a third innings, striking out six with no walks. Marc Peterson took the loss on the mound for the Lakers.
