The Oswego State softball team swept a SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader from SUNYIT on Sunday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego. It capped a perfect 4-0 weekend for the Lakers, after they had swept a pair from Morrisville on Saturday. Oswego State is now 8-3 on the season, and 4-0 in the SUNYAC. SUNYIT remained winless on the year at 0-12 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Oswego State 3, SUNYIT 1
The Lakers scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to win the first game of the doubleheader.
Oswego State fell behind in the top of the fifth when SUNYIT's Andrea Beach hit a solo homer to left field. In the bottom of the inning, Colleen Carmon led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Erin Tracy reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and advanced to second when Ashley Mead grounded out to the pitcher. A wild pitch allowed Carmon to score and Tracy to advance to third, and Rachael Eckhard had an RBI single to put the Lakers in front.
Sarah Castaldo hit a solo homer in the sixth to pad Oswego State's lead to 3-1.
Michelle Jackson was the winning pitcher, allowing just four hits in the game, with six strikeouts and no walks. Heather Weber took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing four hits, with three strikeouts. Just one of the three runs allowed was earned.
Oswego State 11, SUNYIT 2 (6 innings)
Oswego State turned the tide in this game by scoring four runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles by Melissa Ryan and Laura Agle set the table. Ashley Mead reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Rachael Eckhard singled to left field to bring in those two runs and tie the score. Erin Tracy doubled in Eckhard, and Sarah Castaldo's triple to center field brought in Oswego State's fourth run.
The Lakers added seven runs in the bottom of the sixth including a three-run homer by Kelly Cooper that established Oswego State's nine-run lead and ended the game by mercy rule.
SUNYIT capitalized on a leadoff walk in the top of the first as Heather Weber walked and came around to score on a double by Ashley Pratt. They added a run in the top of the fifth by stringing together three straight singles with two outs. Weber started the rally, and came in to score on a hard-hit ball through the left side by Stacey Phelps.
Kaitlyn Thibodeau was the winning pitcher for the Lakers, allowing five hits and two earned runs in six innings. SUNYIT's Gypsys Rodriguez no-hit the Lakers through four and a third innings before Oswego State's bats came to life in the fifth and sixth innings.
