The Oswego State women's volleyball team competed in its second weekend tournament of the 2008 season at the
Victory Promotions Invitational co-hosted by SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence University. In four matches played over two days, the Lakers broke even with a 2-2 record.
Oswego opened play on Friday with a three-set loss to eventual tournament champion Clarkson University (25-20, 25-16, 25-21), then bounced back with a three-set win over Regis College (MA), 25-13, 25-16, 25-16. Freshman Jessi Isgro (Brockport) registered seven kills and four digs in the Clarkson match, followed by six kills apiece from senior co-captain Amanda Cipriano (Solvay) and freshman Margaret Thorpe (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley). Cipriano also added 12 digs, while Beth Widzinski (Amherst/Williamsville South) sparked the defense with 19 digs.
In the Regis match, Isgro led the Oswego offense with 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to go along with eight digs, two assists, and a service ace. Thorpe followed with seven kills, while Cipriano contributed six kills, three aces, and 12 digs. Widzinski and setter Katie VanKessel (22 assists) also served for six aces as the Lakers finished with a match-high 15 aces.
Oswego opened day two with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 loss to St. Lawrence University before concluding the tournament with a four-set triumph (25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23) over fellow SUNYAC West rival Buffalo State College. Against St. Lawrence, Cipriano registered a team-leading 11 kills to go with 14 aces, while Isgro (two aces, eight digs) and Thorpe tacked on seven kills each. Widzinski served for four aces and also collected 18 digs.
In the Buffalo State match, The Lakers served for 13 digs and tallied 62 digs on defense. Thorpe provided the best performance of the weekend with a career-high 19 kills and a .459 hitting percentage, committing only two errors on 37 attempts. Isgro finished with 12 kills and a .379 hitting percentage, while Cipriano (three aces, 15 digs) and junior Alyssa Brock (four aces) registered five kills each. VanKessel dished out 41 assists.
Cipriano was named to the nine-player All-Tournament team, finishing the weekend with 53 digs, 28 kills, and seven aces. Widzinski tallied 10 digs and 75 kills, and Thorpe and Isgro compiled 39 and 38 kills, respectively.
