Lakers defeat Cortland, 5-2, to take sole possesion of second place in SUNYAC

    OSWEGO - Senior forward Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, ONT) tallied a pair of goals and an assist and freshman Eric Selleck (Shanley, ONT) collected three assists in helping Oswego State to its fourth straight win with a 5-2 victory over SUNY Cortland in a SUNYAC contest at the Campus Center Ice Arena at Oswego, moving into sole posession of second place in the conference standings.

 The Lakers (12-5-1, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the opening period, the first coming 46 second into the game on a power-play goal from freshman Andrew Mather.  Ellis added the second goal at 11:34, while senior defenseman Rich Zalewski (New Hartford) scored the game winning goal short handed at 17:24.
 
   Ellis scored the lone goal of the second period at the 3:23 mark, assisted by Selleck and junior Tyler Lyon (Foxboro, Ont), and sophomore defenseman Chris Laganiere (Owego) finished the scoring for the Lakers with a goal 1:04 into the third period (Selleck and Ellis assisting) before the Red Dragons (5-11-1, 3-5-1 SUNYAC) scored their two goals on the power play from junior Gerard Heinz (Rockaway Beach, 5:30) and freshman Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH, 12:07).
 
   Junior goalkeeper Tim Potter (Bakersfield, CA) posted his fourth consecutive win in as many starts in goal for Oswego, stopping 23 shots.  Cortland freshman Mike Reilly (New York City) made 27 saves in picking up the loss.
 
 The Lakers will return to the Campus Center Arena the final weekend of January for back-to-back contests with Fredonia State (Jan. 30) and Buffalo State (Jan 31), both games scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
