After erasing a two-set deficit to force a decisive fifth set, the Oswego State volleyball was unable to complete the comeback as it fell to Keuka College 3-2 (24-26,23-25,25-16,25-21,14-16) on Tuesday night in Oswego.
Katie van Kessel (So., Millbrook, N.Y.) used aggressive jump serving to get back into the match in the third set as the Lakers raced out to an early 12-0 lead before pulling out the set by the score of 25-16.
In the fourth set, Oswego State took advantage of Keuka hitting miscues to grab a small 12-8 lead. The Storm went on a small run of its own after some Laker hitting errors to even the set at 17-17. However, Oswego State scored the next four points with a kill from Jess Isgro (So., Brockport, N.Y.), a pair of service aces from Rachel Rossi (Jr., Waverly, N.Y.), and a kill by Chelsea Crump (Fr., Sandy Creek, N.Y.) to go ahead 21-17. The margin would be enough as the Lakers closed out the set compliments of a Keuka ball handling error.
The final set went back and forth between the squads until a block by Heather Fish and Kandace Scharles gave the Storm a 16-14 victory. Isgro and van Kessel were the only Oswego State players with double-digit kills at 21 and 16, respectively, while Keuka was paced by Holly McHale's 16 kills. Liz Crouch (Jr., Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) dished out 42 assists for the Lakers. van Kessel also finished the match with 24 digs followed by Shauna Westrack's (Fr., Nesconset, N.Y.) 20. Serving played a key role for the Lakers as they recorded 18 aces in the match.
Oswego State, which is 4-17 overall, will host the Oswego State Volleyball Invitational starting at 4 p.m. on Friday. The Storm improved to 7-13 overall.
