Box Score

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team converted three of six power play opportunities to defeat Cortland 5-1 on Friday night in Cortland. Two of those three power play goals came off of the stick of defenseman Stephen Mallaro (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.), who finished the game with two goals. The second-ranked Lakers remained undefeated in league play at 5-0-0, while improving to 6-1-0 overall. The Red Dragons dropped to 1-4 in SUNYAC competition and 2-4-0 overall.

Oswego State took an early 1-0 lead when Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) scored 24 seconds into a Cortland hooking penalty with 2:59 elapsed in the game.  Laganiere was assisted by Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Hunstville, Ont.) and Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.) on the first power play goal of the evening.  The Red Dragons answered right back almost two minutes later as Jake Saville recorded his third goal of the season to make the score 1-1.  Neither team scored for the rest of the frame.

The second period proved to be the difference in the physical contest as both squads combined for seven penalties during the frame.  The Lakers again seized the opportunity with the skater advantage when Mallaro tallied his first goal of the game after receiving a pass from Selleck and Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) at the 4:15 mark.  Cortland had the chance to tie the game shortly after the goal as it went on a power play of its own.  However, assistant captain Neil Musselwhite (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) recorded his third goal of the season on the penalty kill.  He was assisted by junior Kevin Huinink (Whitby, Ont.) with 5:30 elapsed in the period.  Fox added the third Oswego State goal of the period with 47 seconds remaining before the second intermission after Selleck and Laganiere found the opener skater to give the Lakers a commanding 4-1 lead.

Mallaro tacked on his second goal of the contest at 14:30 in the third period with Fox and Whitelaw receiving assists on the power play goal en route to the 5-1 victory.  Laker goaltender Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) made 16 saves and allowed one goal as he improved to 3-0-0 on the season.  Red Dragon goalie Dan Jewell stopped 28 of the 33 shots he faced, as he fell to 0-1-0.

Oswego State returns to the Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday night for a contest against non-conference Utica with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
