The Oswego State women's basketball trailed by three points with five minutes remaining, but was unable to upset nationally-ranked NYU in a 71-65 loss to open the season on Sunday afternoon in Manhattan. Sophomore
Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as three other Lakers also posted double-digit points. The Violets' Grace Carmen led all scorers with 16 points to go along with eight boards.
Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) scored a fastbreak lay-up after an outlet pass from Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) with 10:53 remaining in the first half to give Oswego State an 18-12 advantage over NYU. However, the Violets began to chip into the lead before a pair of Emily Foshag free throws gave NYU its first lead of the game at 22-21 with 5:55 on the clock. Both squads traded baskets for the rest of the period before the Violets built a 34-28 halftime lead.
The Lakers went back on top in the second half when Bacon drained a three-point basket to make the score 42-41. Each team traded small runs, a Kayla Ryan putback gave Oswego State its final lead at 56-55 with 6:43 remaining in the contest. However, NYU went on an ensuing 12-0 run capped off by a Jen Hum-Traverso lay-up to give the Violets a 67-56 lead with under three minutes to play. Both offenses exchanged baskets the rest of the way before a final three-pointer by the Lakers' Kristen Diglio (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) made the score 71-65 in favor of NYU.
In addition to Ryan's 15 points, Rachel Kohrs (Sr., New Lebanon, N.Y.) scored 13 points, while Colleen McCready (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) and Traci Bacon tallied 11 points each. Neither team shot particularly well from the floor as Oswego State shot 36.6 percent on 26-for-71 shooting, while the Violets shot 38.6 percent on 22-for-57 shooting. NYU owned a 49-40 rebounding edge, but held a larger advantage at the free throw line as the Violets went 22-for-30 from the charity stripe compared to the Lakers, who were 7-for-15.
Oswego State will host Morrisville on Friday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. to tip-off the Oswego State Women's Basketball Tournament.
