The Oswego State women's basketball team held off a late charge from visiting Morrisville State to record its first win of the season with a 65-54 victory to open the Max Ziel Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday. The difference in the game came from the Lakers' supporting cast as their bench outscored the Mustangs 15-0. Oswego State improved 1-1 overall, while Morrisville fell to 0-2 overall.
After a sloppy start, Oswego State closed out the first half with a 9-0 run as four different players scored to build a 14-point 33-19 lead. The Lakers overcame a poor shooting first half by pulling down ten offensive rebounds that resulted in ten points.
Momentum carried over to the start of the second half as Oswego State began the period with another 9-0 run courtesy of three Kayla Ryan (So., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) layups and a Kristen Diglio (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) three-point basket as the Lakers led 42-19. Oswego State saw its margin grow to 27 points after a jumper by Colleen McCready (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) with 12:56 left in the contest.
However, Morrisville did not quit as it fought back with a 22-2 run of its own to make the score 55-48 after a three-pointer from Tekesha Hanson. Oswego State regained a double-digit lead on the following possession after Diglio drove along the baseline before she kicked out a pass to Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) for the long-range three to regain a double-digit lead with 3:21 remaining in the game.
The Lakers maintained their advantage for the duration of the contest en route to the 65-54 win. Oswego State was unselfish with the basketball as eight different players combined to record 15 assists and took advantage of Mustang miscues as the Lakers tallied 20 points off of turnovers. Kayla Ryan led Oswego State with 15 points followed by Kristen Diglio and Colleen McCready at 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Mustangs' Bette Davis led all scorers at 19 points. Thelma Picardo also posted 15 points in addition to 13 points from Tekesha Hanson.
The Lakers will face Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday at 3 p.m. to close out the Max Ziel Tournament.
