Oswego State had three players in double digits, but a last second 3-pointer made by Caitlin Irwin of New Paltz forced overtime, which eventually lead to a heart breaking loss 71-65, at home on Friday, Feb. 13. The loss dropped the Lakers to 10-13 overall and 8-6 in SUNYAC play, while the Hawks improved to 14-6 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
Sophomore guard Traci Bacon (Massena) scored a game high 20 points to go along with her eight rebounds while being the only player on either team to play all 45 minutes of the contest. Sophomore forward Colleen McCready (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) added a “double-double” scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, and junior guard Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) scored 12 points going three-for-six from 3-point range in a hard fought game that came down to the wire.
The Hawks had four players in double digits, including Caitlin Iwrin (Brooklyn/ Bishop Valley) with a team high 17, Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale/ Immaculate) added 12, Nicole Sarcone (Staten Island/ Notre Dame Academy) dropped 14, and Carly Minehan (Albany) scored 10 points in a winning effort.
The Lakers took a three point lead with 45 seconds to play in regulation on back-to-back 3-pointers by Traci Bacon and Rachel Kohrs only to see Caitlin Irwin tie the game with three seconds to play in regulation. The momentum from Irwin's shot carried over into ovetime as the Hawks scored the first seven points of the five minute overtime and never looked back. The Lakers turned the ball over 24 times while only forcing 15 from the Hawks, proving to be the difference in the end.
The Lakers return to action tomorrow Feb. 14 at home against Oneonta starting at 6 p.m.
