Oswego State had three starters scoring in double digits, yet could not overcome a cold-shooting first half in picking up its second loss in SUNYAC play and third defeat overall in a 72-56 loss at The College at Brockport on Saturday, Feb. 7. The loss dropped the Lakers (9-12, 7-5 SUNYAC) to fifth place in the conference standings, while the Golden Eagles (12-8, 7-4 SUNYAC) moved into fourth place.
Senior Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George), Junior Traci Bacon (Massena), and freshman Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosic Valley) combined to score 48 of the team's 56 points, with Merino leading the group with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor and six of seven free-throw shooting. Ryan and Bacon contributed 14 points and two steals apiece, with Ryan posting a “double-double” with 10 rebounds and Bacon dishing out a team-leading five assists.
The Lakers, despite connecting on 12 of 16 free throws, shot 37.5 percent from the floor (21-for-56), including 30 percent (9-for-30) in the first half. There were five ties and four lead changes in the opening 7:24 of the opening half, with Oswego taking its last lead of the game at 15-13 with 13:20 to play on a pair of free-throws from Merino, before Brockport responded with eight straight points as part of a 26-9 run for the rest of the period to take a 39-24 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles would never trail again, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Brockport shot 50 percent (15 of 30) from the field and made six of eight from three-point range in the first half. Whitney Smith led the Golden Eagles with 24 points, 17 of them coming in the first half on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor with five 3-pointers, followed by 21 points from Brenlyn Campbell.
