Lakers win fifth in a row with doubleheader sweep of Cobleskill

Oswego State extended its season-best winning streak to five games in three days, collecting a combined 28 hits in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, April 15 on Laker Baseball Diamond.

The Lakers (12-8) posted an 8-4 victory in game one, coming back from a 4-1 deficit through four innings with three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth. They completed the sweep with an 18-hit performance in a 17-4 triumph in the second game.

Junior Matt Deveney (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) turned in a .714 batting average for both games, hitting 5-for-7 with two runs scored and five runs batted in to lead the Lakers (12-8).  Senior Josh Stoetzel (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit .571 on the day (4-for-7) with three runs scored and three RBI.

In game one Oswego tied the score on two occasions before taking the lead to stay in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on six hits, with Stoetzel driving in the go-ahead run on a triple, scoring senior Mike Levy (Salisbury Mills/Washingtonville) from first base. Three batters later, Deveney belted a bases-loaded single with one out to drive in a pair of runs, with a third scoring unearned on the same play after a Cobleskill throwing error.

Freshman pitcher Rich Ireland (Mattituck) went the distance to get the victory on the mound, striking out 11 while yielding a walk in facing 30 batters.

The Fighting Tigers (5-14) opened game two by scoring twice in the first inning before the Lakers scored five times on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead to stay. Cobleskill added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Oswego added a run in the bottom of the inning and scored twice in the fifth before exploding for six runs on six hits in the sixth inning.

Senior left fielder Wes O'Connor (Savannah/Clyde-Savannah) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI, and senior third baseman Pat O'Keefe (Bronx/Lehman) finished 3-for-4 with a runs scored, while Deveney (two runs, two RBI), Stoetzel (home run, two runs, two RBI), and Junior outfielder Brian Stark (Rochester/Greece Athena; three runs, two RBI) each collected two hits as the Lakers tallied six extra-base hits (five doubles, home run) as part of their 18-hit output.

Senior PJ Cowie (Rochester/Spencerport) pitched five innings en route to earning the victory, striking out six batters.
