On a day that saw both Oswego State and Oneonta State combine to score 58 runs on 59 hits, the Lakers posted their second SUNYAC doubleheader split in as many days on Sunday, April 19 on Laker Baseball Diamond. Oneonta dominated in winning the opener, 23-6, while Oswego had to hold off a late ninth inning rally by the Red Dragons to come away with a 15-13 win in game two.
In the first game, Oneonta opened with two runs on its first four hits as part of a six-run, six-hit first inning. The Red Dragons, who tallied five doubles, two triples, and six home runs as part of their 23-hit output, led 27-0 through seven and one-half innings before the Lakers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when second baseman Zack Owen's (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) single drove in Pat O'Keefe (Bronx/Lehman) from first base. Josh Stoetzel (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse), who reached base on a walk, also scored on the play after an Oneonta error in the outfield.
Oswego scored its third run in the ninth inning when right fielder Matt Deveney (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) singled to drive in K.C. Reardon (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) from second base. The Lakers were to held to six hits, with no player managing multiple hits.
Oneonta first baseman Dan Randall batted 4-for-5, which included home runs in the second (two RBI), fifth (solo), and eighth (grand slam) innings, finishing with 10 runs batted in.
Game two saw Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings before the Lakers got on the board in the fourth inning on a run scoring single from left fielder Wes O'Connor (Savannah/Clyde-Savannah), scoring centerfielder Bryan Stark (Rochester/Greece Athena) from first base.
The Red Dragons scored twice in the top of the fifth on a two-run single before Oswego scored four times in the bottom of the inning and three in the sixth to jump out to an 8-5 lead. The Lakers put up their largest run output of the game with a seven-run, five-hit seventh inning to take a 15-5 lead. O'Connor and Reardon scored on Oneonta wild pitches, and O'Keefe (single), shortstop Mike Levy (Salisbury Mills/Washingtonville; double, 2 RBI), and Stoetzel (single, 2 RBI) each registered run-scoring hits.
Oneonta opened the top of the ninth with a solo homer and followed with seven more runs on six hits to pull to within a pair of runs. The Red Dragons had the tying runs on first and third and the go ahead run at the plate before flying out to right field to end the game.
Stoetzel and O'Connor each finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, while O'Keefe batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Starter Dave Widrick (Lowville) pitched eight and two-third innings, yielding 13 hits with three strikeouts, to pick up the win. Andy Salvatore (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) faced the final three batters, yielding two hits, to register the save.
