Lakers SUNYAC woes continue with doubleheader losses at Geneseo

The Oswego State softball team suffered its third straight doubleheader sweep in SUNYAC play in dropping a pair of games to SUNY Geneseo on Thursday, April 23 in Geneseo. The Lakers (7-19, 2-14) dropped a hard luck 1-0 decision in game one, while suffering a 10-2 loss in the nightcap.

The opening game was a pitching duel between Oswego senior Michelle Jackson (Amsterdam) and Geneseo sophomore Janine Montera. Both pitchers yielded five hits, with Jackson striking out four batters while walking two. The Blue Knights (17-15, 12-6 SUNYAC) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single with two outs.

The Lakers had a chance to break the game open with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning with one out, but hit into a game-ending double play.  Freshman shortstop Shannon Baker (Hannibal) and sophomore designated player Amy Easterly (Cazenovia) each went 2-for-3, while junior second baseman Erin Tracy (Pulaski) batted 1-for-2.

Game two saw Oswego score the game's first run in the top of the second inning when Tracy belted a leadoff home run. Geneseo answered with six runs on four hits with three Laker errors and never trailed again.

Oswego added another run in the fifth inning when freshman Brittany Carbacio (Pennelville/Phoenix), who got on base after a leadoff single and advanced to second on a single from senior centerfielder Keri Starr (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy), scored from third base after back-to-back wild pitches. Geneseo, however, ended the game on the eight-run mercy rule after scoring twice in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Sophomore Marie Loher (Afton) was the lone Laker with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Junior Erika Ayers (Holley) picked up the loss after tossing six innings, striking out one batter while walking one.

Oswego wraps up SUNYAC play with back-to-back weekend road games with Potsdam (Apr. 24) and Plattsburgh (Apr. 25), before closing out the regular-season with a 3:30 home contest with Union College on Tuesday, April 28.
