Oswego State held a one-run lead through seven innings before 12th-ranked Ithaca College put up four runs on two hits in the top of the seventh inning to post a 5-2 decision over the Lakers in a non-conference matchup on Friday, April 24 on Laker Baseball Field. The loss snapped a three-game win streak and dropped their record to 16-11 with seven games remaining in the regular-season.
Both teams opened with an unearned run each on errors in the second inning before Oswego took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh when junior outfielder Bryan Stark (Rochester/Greece Athena) hit an RBI single with two outs to bring home senior third baseman Pat O'Keefe (Bronx/Lehman) from third. O'Keefe reached base after being hit by a pitch, followed by a stolen base and an advance to third after an Ithaca throwing error by the catcher.
Ithaca (24-6) opened the eighth putting runners on base on a hit by pitch and a single to put runners on the corners. After a stolen base and an intentional walk to load up the bases, the Bombers brought in the tying run on a sacrifice fly and registered the eventual winning runs on a two-run single. The fourth run came in unearned after a throw to second to throw out the baserunner went into the outfield.
The Lakers started out the eighth and ninth innings with the leadoff batter hit by pitches, but Ithaca retired the side both times.
Both teams tallied nine hits total on the day, with the Lakers having no one with more than a hit in compiling four. Senior P.J. Cowie (Rochester/Spencerport) pitched seven innings, striking out seven batters while yielding four walks and three runs (two earned), in getting the hard-luck loss. Senior Dan Pecora (Oswego) and freshman Brady Farkas (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) pitched an inning each, combining for three strikeouts.
Oswego takes to the road for its next two games, starting with a SUNYAC doubleheader at Plattsburgh at noon on Sunday, April 26, before traveling to SUNY Cobleskill for seven-inning doubleheaders on Tuesday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m.
