Lakers snap SUNYAC losing skid with doubleheader sweep at Potsdam

Oswego State broke a 2-2 deadlock in the top of the fourth inning when junior first baseman Laura Agle (Eden) drove in freshman Brittany Carbacio (Pennellville/Phoenix) from third base on a fielders choice as the Lakers snapped a six-game losing streak in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 3-2 triumph over host SUNY Potsdam in game one of a doubleheader. Oswego completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.

No player from either team registered multiple hits as both combined for only seven hits in game one. Senior Michelle Jackson (Amsterdam) pitched a complete game in picking up the victory, striking out eight batters while walking only two. Oswego produced seven hits, with sophomore third baseman Christine Linguanti (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) belted a two-out, two run single in the opening inning to drive in junior second baseman Erin Tracy (Pulaski) and senior right fielder Keri Star (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy), who each tallied a hit.

In game two, the Bears jumped on the board first with their only runs of the game on two hits and a Laker error.  Oswego erased the deficit and took the lead for good in the second inning with five runs on five hits with a Potsdam error, With Starr scoring the go-ahead runs on a two-out, two RBI single.

The Lakers added three runs in the fourth inning as Starr belted a two-run triple with and scored on a wild pitch a batter later, and completed the scoring in the following inning on an RBI single from junior catcher Ellen Dungey (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbridge).  Starr finished the game going 2-4  with two runs scored, and Dungey batted 3-for-3.

Junior Erika Ayers (Holley) posted the complete-game win with a two-hitter, striking out five while walking none and yielding only an earned run.
The Lakers play their second SUNYAC doubleheader in as many days with a 1:00 p.m. showdown at Plattsburgh.
