Oswego State gave up back-to-back RBI singles with two out in the top of the ninth inning as visiting College of Brockport broke a 4-4 tie en route to a 6-4 win over the Lakers in game one of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Sunday, April 5 at Laker Baseball Diamond.
The Golden Eagles (7-13, 4-2 SUNYAC) completed the sweep with an 11-5 triumph in game two, combining for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings and seven runs in the eighth.
In the opening game, Oswego (6-6, 0-4 SUNYAC) struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning as senior designated hitter KC Reardon (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a two-out, bases-loaded single to drive in shortstop Mike Levy (Salisbury Mills/Washingtonville) from third and right fielder Brandon Wroblewski (Rochester/Greece Arcadia) from second. Brockport evened the score in the in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs on a two-out single from second baseman Mike Meola.
The Lakers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning as Wroblewski and senior first baseman Josh Stoetzel (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) opened with back-to-back singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt from junior Bryan Stark (Rochester/Greece Athena) to advance runners up a base. Reardon drove in his third run of the game as he grounded out to first, but drove in Stoetzel from third base.
The Golden Eagles took the lead to stay in the fourth inning as first baseman Max Zimmerman belted a two-run homer with two out. Oswego added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single by freshman Kane Share (Brockport), but Brockport added two more runs in the top of the ninth on back-to-back RBI hits by designated hitter Kris Gentzke (double) and catcher Joe Zaccardo (single).
Wroblewski finished 3-for-5 at the plate, while Reardon and Stoetzel each tallied a pair of hits each for Oswego, who finished with ten hits for the game
Jason Shannon picked up the win, facing 36 batters in eight innings with eight strikeouts, while Jordon Allen pitched the final inning to get the save. Sophomore Dustin LeFave (Moravia) went the distance in getting the loss for the Lakers, striking out seven batters while walking three.
Game two of the doubleheader started out almost exactly as the first as Oswego scored the game's opening two runs. After Levy opened with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt from senior Wes O'Connor (Savannah/Clyde-Savannah), Wroblewski drove in Levy after reaching on an error and moving to second base. An out later, junior designated hitter Zack Eason (Oswego) drove in Wroblewski on a single.
Brockport took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth. After the Lakers added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded double play, the Golden Eagles scored seven runs on five hits and two Laker errors in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Meola and Brent Nicholson each had three hits with a pair of runs batted in to lead Brockport Gentzke tossed six innings en route to the win in game two for Brockport, giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out seven batters.
Eason batted 2-for-5 while catcher Dan Pecora was 2-for-4, scoring one of two Laker runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Junior pitcher Andy Salvatore (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) picked up the loss, pitching seven innings in yielding ten hits and nine runs (eight earned) while striking out eight.
