Box Score
The top-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team claimed the PathFinder Bank/Oswego Classic Championship after a 3-1 win over sixth-ranked Elmira College on Sunday night in Oswego. The Lakers extended their program-record winning streak to 14 games, which is the longest stretch in Division III, to improve to 15-1-0 overall.
The Soaring Eagles fell to 10-3-0 overall. Oswego State got on the scoreboard first when
Neil Musselwhite scored his fifth short-handed goal of the season at 5:10 in the first period. Musselwhite hustled after a loose puck that dribbled across the blue line on the penalty kill, and skated in on Elmira goaltender Casey Tuttle for a backhand. The Lakers added a power play goal late in the frame after a
Tyler Lyon slap shot from the center of the blue line was deflected past Tuttle by
Luke Moodie at the 17:58 mark. Elmira responded after the ensuing faceoff as Darcy Vallaincourt tallied his eighth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Rick Acorn with 1:19 remaining in the first.
The Soaring Eagles had several scoring chances in the second period as Oswego State committed three penalties in the first ten minutes. However, the Laker penalty kill stood strong as it did not allow an Elmira score. Oswego State used this momentum to score its third goal of the game when
Eric Selleck crashed the front of the net for the loose puck at 14:35.
Justin Fox and
Chris Laganiere earned assists on the last goal of the game, as the Lakers skated to the 3-1 victory.
Oswego State netminder
Kyle Gunn-Taylor picked up his tenth win of the season after making 18 saves on 19 shots. Soaring Eagle goaltender Casey Tuttle stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Lakers went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Elmira finished the contest 0-for-6.
Justin Fox was named the Pathfinder Bank/Oswego Classic Tournament MVP after tallying one goal and four assists in two games. Laker teammate
Kevin Huinink, Elmira forward Darcy Vallaincourt, and Elmira goaltender Casey Tuttle were also named to the all-tournament squad.
