A balanced offensive effort helped the Oswego State men's ice hockey team post a 6-1 victory over visiting Cortland on Friday night to remain unbeaten at 7-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the SUNYAC standings. Six different skaters scored for the second-ranked Lakers, while eight separate players tallied assists. The Red Dragons broke up the shutout bid in the third period as they fell to 2-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the league.
The Lakers got on the scoreboard at 5:01 in the first period when a pile of Oswego State and Cortland players battled for the puck right behind Red Dragon netminder Mike Reilly. Reilly was looking over his right shoulder when
Matt Singleton emerged from the confusion with the puck, and put it in near the left post for the easy goal.
Luke Moodie and
Tyler Leimbrock earned assists on the play.
On the ensuing face-off,
Ian Boots carried the puck up the left side behind Reilly. Boots found
Chris Brown sitting on the right post, where Brown tapped in the puck for his first collegiate goal, giving the Lakers a quick 2-0 lead.
Oswego State tacked on its third goal when it used quick transition passing to create a 3-on-2 rush.
Chris Ayotte moved the puck into the zone on the right boards, and laced a pass to
Andrew Mather, who was crashing to the net. Mather ripped a one-timer from the left face-off that went over Reilly's left shoulder for the score, as the Lakers took a 3-0 advantage into the locker room.
Paul Beckwith was credited with an assist on the play.
The lone goal of the second period came in the first minute of the frame as
Ian Boots one-timed a shot after receiving the pass from Brown.
Stephen Mallaro was also credited with an assist on the play. Cortland had two power-play chances in the last ten minutes of the period, but was only able to get two shots on goal.
The Red Dragons had a golden opportunity to score in the third period as they gained a 5-on-3 chance for nearly 90 seconds. Oswego State successfully killed off the first penalty, but Cortland's Chris Kuleta pounced on a rebound near the right post after Laker goalie
Paul Beckwith turned away a shot by Peter Lompado at 5:50 just as it expired.
Oswego State got the goal back almost six minutes later when
Justin Fox fired a pass through the slot to Leimbrock, whose slap shot found the back of net in the top left corner, on a delayed penalty call. The following Red Dragon penalty led to a tic-tac-toe passing play between
Jon Whitelaw and
Chris Muise, who hit Moodie for the quick shot and the Lakers' sixth goal of the contest.
Beckwith finished the contest with 33 saves for his seventh win of the season, while Reilly compiled 41 saves in the loss.
Oswego State will take to the road Saturday for a key non-conference contest versus Utica at 7 p.m.
