The Oswego State women's basketball team could not keep the momentum from the weekend going into Tuesday's contest at SUNY New Paltz as the Hawks handed the Lakers a 59-44 loss. New Paltz took an early lead with the first basket of the game and never trailed the rest of the way. With just two games left on the season, Oswego State dropped to 12-11 and 9-7 in the SUNYAC, while the Hawks improved to 15-9 overall and 12-5 in the conference.
Both teams struggled from the field shooting roughly 35.0 percent, but the Hawks three-point shooting gave them the edge. The Lakers added to their woes by committing 28 turnovers and going just 9-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Despite playing from behind for the entire first half, the Lakers did not let up and pulled within one with 2:06 remaining on a bucket by Kayla Ryan, who was the only Laker in double figures with 10 points. Wanda Sanchez also added 9 points off the bench, but that would not be enough to stop the Hawks who closed the half on a 7-0 run; giving them the 29-21 advantage.
Oswego State could not find a rhythm heading into the second half, as a 14-3 run by New Paltz proved to be too much for the Lakers to overcome. The Hawks also shot 53.0 percent from the charity stripe and controlled the offensive board by a 13-7 margin. Carly Minehan of New Paltz led all scorers with 13 points.
The Lakers will once again work toward gaining home-court advantage in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs on Friday at 6 p.m. when the team travels to Fredonia.
