Kayla Ryan connected on a pair of clutch free throws in overtime to propel the Oswego State women's basketball team past Fredonia 63-60 on Friday night in Fredonia.
Colleen McCready sent the game into overtime for the Lakers after making a reverse pivot in the lane and banking in the short jumper with 28 seconds left in regulation. With the victory, the Lakers improved to 13-11 on the season and 10-7 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils dropped to 10-13 overall and 6-11 in the conference. Oswego State remains tied for fourth place in the SUNYAC with Geneseo.
Both teams battled evenly through much of the first half. The Lakers shot just 37 percent from the field, but still managed to keep pace with the Blue Devils. At the halfway mark, the Blue Devils held their largest lead of the contest at 34-26 behind 11 of Katie Landy's 21 game-high points.
Oswego State would not go down without a fight and scored two quick baskets to begin the second half. Fredonia kept the offensive attack coming, as the Lakers tried to chip away at the lead. With 8:26 to go, a lay-up by Tricia Sullivan tied the game at 42. There were 11 lead changes and nine ties throughout the contest as both teams hustled up and down the court.
The Blue Devils held on to a two-point advantage with the clock winding down, but a critical steal by Traci Bacon gave the Lakers another opportunity. With just 48 seconds remaining, Colleen McCready connected on a jumper to tie the game at 52. Fredonia had the last offensive possession, but a missed lay-up sent the game into overtime.
In the overtime, both teams came out strong shooting 50 percent from the field. After nearly five minutes of exchanging buckets, Oswego State held a slim one-point lead, as Ryan was sent to the free throw line with just 11 seconds left in the contest. Ryan drained both shots to seal the 63-60 victory for the Lakers.
Kayla Ryan lead Oswego State with 17 followed by 14 points from McCready, 13 from Bacon, and 10 from Kristen Diglio. The Lakers free-throw shooting woes did not follow them from Tuesday's game, as they shot 70 percent for the game and went 3-for-3 in the extra period.
Oswego State will wrap up its regular season and determine its seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament tomorrow at Buffalo State at 2 p.m.
