The Oswego State softball team opened its 2010 SUNYAC schedule with a pair of losses to New Paltz by the scores of 6-0 and 7-5 on Friday in New Paltz. The Lakers were able to get runners on base in both contests, but struggled to convert them into runs as 18 total runners were stranded. Oswego State, which fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the league, will play a doubleheader in Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Game one started with the first two Oswego State batters reaching base after being hit by a pitch and a walk.  A groundball advanced the runners to second and third, but the next two hitters were called out on strikes.  In the bottom of the first, the first three New Paltz batters got on base when Samantha Barra delivered a two-RBI single.  The Hawks held a 6-0 lead by the end of inning after another two-RBI single from Dale Cornelius and a two-run Erin Fitzpatrick homerun.

Marie Steding settled into a rhythm on the mound after the first for the Lakers as she allowed one hit over the next three innings, but it was too late as New Paltz posted the win.  Halie Bloom pitched two shutout innings in relief of Steding.  The Hawks' Alyssa Oliva struck out seven, walked one and allowed two hits in five innings for the win.

Shannon Baker kicked off the second game with a single for Oswego State to start a two-run rally.  Eileen Joyce recorded the key at-bat of the inning when her base hit drove in both runs.  New Paltz immediately responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs of its own.  Both teams traded runs until the Hawks scored three runs with two outs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead.

Joyce pulled the Lakers to within two runs at 7-5 when she crossed home plate after Laura Agle's infield hit forced a New Paltz error.  However, that was as close as Oswego State would get as the Lakers stranded three runners in the remaining two innings.  Bloom gave up six earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings, while striking out three, before Sarah Thayer scattered two hits in the final 2.1 innings.  Joyce led Oswego State at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI.
