Oswego State pounded out 19 hits in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader against Cazenovia on the way to a 19-0 win, but the Laker baseball team was unable to complete the sweep as it fell in game two 9-8.
Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) provided much of the offensive firepower for the Lakers in the win by going 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while
Dan Erne (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) tossed an eight-hit complete game shutout. Oswego State moved to 14-10 overall, while Cazenovia moved to 5-19.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lakers loaded the bases to start the second after Dave Mazzullo (So., Rochester, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and Dan Slate (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Kane Share (So., Brockport, N.Y.) were walked. Cordero then singled into left field driving in two runs. The fourth walk of the inning led to Oswego State's third run of the frame.
With a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth, the Lakers exploded for six runs on three hits as Mazzullo delivered the key hit of the inning with a two-RBI double to right field. Slate later added an RBI double to give Oswego State complete control of the game with an 11-0 lead. Head coach Frank Paino's squad went on to cross home plate in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings capped off by Ryan Clements' (Fr., Troy, N.Y.) three-run homer in the seventh for the 19-0 victory.
The run support in the second inning would have been more than enough for Erne, who struck out two and issued no walks, while scattering eight hits over the course of seven innings.
The scoring carried into the second game as Mazzullo ripped a single up the middle of the infield driving in Andrew Lazzaro (So., Oswego, N.Y.) and Mike Tarnowski (Fr., Dunkirk, N.Y.) to give the Lakers an early 2-0 lead. Cazenovia answered with three runs on one hit in the bottom half of the frame as it took advantage of two Laker errors to go ahead 3-2. Oswego State regained a two-run lead in its next at-bat when Tarnowski hit a three-run blast. However, the Wildcats chipped away at the deficit before holding a 9-5 advantage at the end of five innings.
The Lakers battled back to within one run at 9-8 by scoring three runs in the top half of the sixth. In its final at-bat, Oswego State put the game-tying run on first after Kris Prikazsky (So., Endicott, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) came into run for Prikazsky, stole second after a strikeout, and moved to third after a deep fly ball to center. However, the rally came to an end with another strikeout.
Tarnowski finished the game going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Mike Stark went 2-for3 and Dave Mazzullo drove in two more runs. Jon Stevens (Fr., Chittenango, N.Y.) suffered the loss after going four innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out five, and walking two.
The Lakers return to action on Thursday with a nine-inning game versus St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. in Oswego.
