The Oswego State softball team was unable to keep up the firepower from nationally eighth-ranked Cortland as the Lakers fell 11-0 and 10-2 in six innings.
Sue Schoff (Fr., Little Falls, N.Y.) and
Brittany Carbacio (So., Pennellville, N.Y.) recorded the Laker RBI in the second game. Oswego State dropped to 3-25 on the season and 0-14 in the SUNYAC standings, while the Red Dragons moved to 28-6 overall and 12-0 in the league.
Cortland scored two runs in each of the first three innings to hold a commanding 6-0 lead with pitcher Katie Finch on the mound. The Red Dragons added another run in the top of the fourth before exploding for four runs in the sixth on four hits. Finch earned the win as she struck out five and allowed one hit over five innings, while Morgan Kuhn closed out the game with a scoreless sixth. Sarah Thayer (Fr., Winthrop, N.Y.) recorded the loss as she allowed nine earned runs.
In the second game of the twinbill, Cortland struck first in the third when Emily Ringen's sacrifice fly to center drove in Donnalyn Cross for the 1-0 edge. However, Erin Tracy (Sr., Pulaski, N.Y.) led off the bottom half of the frame with a single before advancing to third after a double by Laura Agle (Sr., Eden, N.Y.). Schoff then laid down a bunt that drove in Tracy while safely reaching first. Carbacio's two-out single to right later scored Agle to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. The Red Dragons put three runs on the board in the fifth following two hits and an Oswego State error, but had a big two-out rally in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule. Cortland scored six runs in the stanza, but five of those came with two outs and was capped off by a two-run homer to straight away center from Kayla Lynch. The Lakers went down in order in the sixth for a 10-2 decision.
Marie Steding (Fr., Central Square, N.Y.) pitched a complete game allowing nine earned runs, while striking out three and walking four. Lyndsay Rowell posted the victory by going the distance striking out seven and giving four hits, three of which came in the third inning.
Oswego State will face non-conference Union on Tuesday, April 27 at 3 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y.
