The Oswego State baseball team's league playoff chances suffered a blow as the Lakers were swept by Plattsburgh by the scores of 21-12 and 10-7 on Sunday in Oswego. Freshman
Ryan Clements (Troy, N.Y.) went a combined 5-for-10 from the plate driving in three runs and scoring twice. Oswego State fell to 15-12 overall and 2-8 in the SUNYAC standings, while Plattsburgh moved to 28-8 on the season and 7-5 in the league.
The Cardinals set the tone early in game one as Pat Shaughnessy hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run first inning. The Lakers answered back with a run in their half of the frame when Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) came around to score after a lead-off double. Oswego State took a 4-3 lead in the next inning with RBI hits from Kane Share (So., Brockport, N.Y.), Clements, and Cordero.
After Plattsburgh scored three runs in the third, the Lakers regained a 7-6 lead in the fourth with three runs of their own highlighted by a two-RBI double from Andrew Lazzaro (So., Oswego, N.Y.). The Cardinals took the lead for good in the fifth at 11-7 when they tallied five runs on three hits and three Oswego State errors. Plattsburgh went on to build a 21-7 lead through bottom of the eighth when the Lakers put together a five-run, two-out rally. Dan Slate (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) produced the big hit of the inning with a double that brought in Share and Cordero. However, the lead was too much to overcome as the Cardinals won 21-12.
Brady Farkas (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) suffered the loss after going 4.1 innings in relief and allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Marc Plante picked up the win in 5.2 innings in relief as well giving seven runs on eight hits. Oswego State's 2-5 hitters each finished with two RBI, while Cordero and Share each went 3-for-5.
Plattsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but the Lakers bounced back to score three runs in the second and third frames. Clements, Dan Erne (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.), and Brooks Beatty (Jr., Atwater, Calif.) started the second with singles to start the game-tying rally. In the third, Erne roped a base hit down the first base line to drive in two runs after Clements had already doubled in a run earlier in the stanza, as Oswego State took a 6-3 lead.
However, the Cardinals began to chip away at the deficit before taking the 8-6 lead in the fifth with three runs on three hits and one error. Plattsburgh pushed the advantage to four runs after scoring twice in the seventh. The Lakers put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth when Slate and Tarnowski started the inning with consecutive singles. Clements hit a two-out single into left field driving in Slate from second to make the final score 10-7.
Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recorded the loss for Oswego State after pitching 6.1 innings giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Dan Tracy worked eight innings surrendering seven runs on 12 hits for the win.
The Lakers will travel to Utica to face the Pioneers on Wednesday for a single nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
