Dan Erne (Rochester, N.Y.) went the distance on the mound help the Oswego State baseball team defeat non-conference Utica 12-6 on Wednesday afternoon in Utica. Erne struck out ten Pioneer batters, while scattering nine hits for six earned runs. Offensively,
Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) provided a spark at the top of the lineup as he went 3-for-5 driving in four runs for the Lakers, who improved to 16-12 overall. The Pioneers dropped to 7-18 on the season.
Oswego State built a 3-0 lead in the top of the third after turning two base hits, a hit batter and two Utica errors into three runs. The Pioneers answered back with a run in their half of the third to make the score 3-1. Each squad added runs in the fourth before the Lakers added to their lead in the fifth. Cordero delivered a two-RBI single as Bryan Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Brooks Beatty (Jr., Atwater, Calif.) crossed home plate to go up 5-1.
Oswego State tallied four runs in the sixth as it took advantage of three walks and Cordero recorded another two-RBI single to take an insurmountable lead at 9-1. Utica posted a pair of two-run innings before the end of the contest, but it would not be enough as the Lakers recorded the 12-6 victory.
In addition to Cordero's performance, Andrew Lazzaro (So., Oswego, N.Y.) and Beatty each went 3-for-4 and scored three and two runs, respectively. Ryan Clements (Fr., Troy, N.Y.) added three hits and two runs scored as well.
