The Oswego State softball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses at Oneonta on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 6-5 and 3-2. The Red Dragons won each game in their final at-bats as they improved to 2-2 in the league and 7-6 overall. The Lakers dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the SUNY Athletic Conference with the losses.
In the first game of the twinbill, Oswego State took advantage of an Oneonta error in its first at-bat to grab a 1-0 lead. The Lakers extended their lead in the fourth inning when Sue Schoff led off the frame with a double to centerfield. Ashley Sheridan picked up a timely hit when her double to left center drove in two runs to give Oswego State a 3-0 advantage.
The Lakers added a run in the fifth and sixth innings with RBI from Shannon Baker and Eileen Joyce for a 5-0 lead. The Red Dragons ended the shutout bid in the bottom half of the sixth when Katie Hackenburg drove in Meg Beditz from second base, as Oswego State held a four-run lead heading into the final at-bats.
Halie Bloom came into the game for Marie Steding for the Lakers after the first three Oneonta batters reached base in the bottom of the seventh frame. The Red Dragons went on to score five runs, including the walk-off run driven in by Hackenburg.
Marie Steding gave up seven hits and four earned runs in six innings on the mound, while Bloom suffered the hard-luck loss in one-third of an inning and allowing two runs. Jessica Iuliano earned the win for Oneonta after allowing two earned runs over seven innings.
Oswego State's Erin Tracy started the second inning of game two with single followed up by a RBI-double from Eileen Joyce to put head coach Chyrisse Conte's squad ahead 1-0. The Red Dragons answered back with a run of their own when Oneonta was able to move around Sam Voncina, who led off the stanza with a double. Another lead-off double for Oneonta led to another run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers knotted the score at 2-2 in the top portion of the sixth when Schoff crossed home plate after a Red Dragon error. Drama ensued again, though, in the bottom of the seventh when Jillian Serraro got on base after a fielder's choice and two outs. Hackenburg delivered yet another pivotal hit with a single down the left field line advancing Serraro to third. Aly Helstrom followed Hackenburg with a single that drove in the game-winning run.
Sarah Thayer picked up the loss for Oswego State after scattering nine hits across 6.2 innings and giving up two earned runs. Jessica Bartalsky posted the complete game win after allowing five hits and one earned run.
The Lakers will stay on the road when they travel to Rochester to face St. John Fisher on Wednesday, April 7 at 3 p.m.
