The Oswego State baseball team recorded a non-conference series sweep of SUNYIT by the scores of 11-9 and 4-1 on Monday afternoon in Oswego. Three different Laker players had multiple RBI in the first game of the set, while strong pitching helped clinch the win in game two. Oswego State moved to 9-5 overall, while the Wildcats dropped to 6-13 on the season. The Lakers will host Keuka in a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. in Oswego.
Oswego State trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning of game one when the SUNYIT starting pitcher, Adam Shea, struggled with his control allowing the first three hitters of the frame to reach due to base on balls to start a big Laker rally. Shea was pulled after the third walk with a stat line of two innings pitched, four earned runs, six walks, and five wild pitches. Oswego State went on to score four runs in the inning capped off by a two-run homer from Andrew Lazzaro (So., Oswego, N.Y.) to take a 5-3 lead.
The Lakers put together another solid inning in the fifth when four of the team's seven total hits came during the at-bat. Bryan Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) delivered the key hit of the frame when his two-out single drove in two runs as Oswego State ended the inning with an 11-4 lead. However, SUNYIT rallied for five runs in the top half of the sixth due primarily to a three-run home run by Dave Orza to cut the deficit to 11-9.
Brady Farkas (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) came into the game for the save opportunity in the seventh, and gave up one hit and struck out one batter to preserve the win for the Lakers. Freshman Jon Stevens (Chittenango, N.Y.) posted the win working six innings and allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out four. Oswego State was able to work out of a couple jams during the game by turning three double plays. Stark finished the game 1-for-2 with three runs scored to go along with three RBI, while Mike Tarnowski (Fr., Dunkirk, N.Y.) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish scoring one run and driving in two more.
In game two, Oswego State manufactured two runs through stolen bases to take the early 2-0 lead after Dan Slate (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored and Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) drove in Ryan Clements (Fr., Troy, N.Y.) from second base. The Lakers scored another run in the bottom of the second when Stark singled in Slate from second for a three-run advantage. Oswego State tallied its final run of the game after a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lazzaro.
SUNYIT ended the shutout in the seventh when a lead-off double came around to score, but Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) would retire three of the next four batters to give the Lakers the 4-1 win.
Marc Peterson (Jr., Geneseo, N.Y.) earned the victory on the mound for Oswego State after 4.1 innings. He scattered four hits, walked four, and struck out five for zero earned runs. Salvatore finished 2.2 innings with two hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts.
