Mike Tarnowski's (Fr., Dunkirk, N.Y.) pinch-hit double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Oswego State baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over Clarkson to earn a series split on Monday afternoon in Oswego.
Matt Deveney (Sr., North Syracuse, N.Y.) led off the frame with a double that rolled to the left field fence before scoring the game-winning run. The Laker offense struggled in first game as the Golden Knights prevailed 6-0. Oswego State moved to 18-16 on the season, while Clarkson moved to 16-15.
The Golden Knights struck the first blow in their first at-bat when David Kinney and Brett Peplowski crossed home plate for a 2-0 lead. Clarkson added runs in the third and the fourth to extend its advantage to 4-0 before Jerry Coleman's solo shot and Matt Curry's unearned run in the seventh put the Lakers in a 6-0 hole
The Oswego State offense was unable to generate any run support for starting pitcher Dan Erne (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.), who suffered the loss despite pitching a complete game and surrendering three earned runs. Golden Knight starter Kyle Moldoff recorded the win by throwing a no-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks.
In game two, Jon Stevens (Fr., Chittenango, N.Y.) posted the Lakers' first hit to start the bottom of the third. Later in the inning, Dan Slate's (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to center field drove in Stevens and advanced Deveney to third after earning a walk. Rafael Cordero (Jr., Utica, N.Y.) ripped a single to score Deveney for a 2-0 lead. However, Clarkson tied the game in the fifth after Paul Conte and Coleman scored. Oswego State took a one-run lead in its half of the inning when Slate laid down a sacrifice bunt after Deveney delivered his first double of the game to start the rally. The Golden Knights knotted the score again in the sixth, but neither team was able to touch home in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Clarkson had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth before Andy Salvatore (Sr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recorded a strike out. Chris Falteisek worked a full count in the next at-bat, but Salvatore and the rest of the Laker infield successfully executed the hidden ball trick to get the Golden Knight runner on third caught in a run-down to end the threat. Deveney went on to lead off the ninth for Oswego State with his extra-base hit before Mike Tarnowski stepped to the plate to drive in the game-winning run.
Salvatore pitched 3.2 innings in relief scattering three hits without giving up a run. Brady Farkas (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) went 5.1 innings, striking out five and walking two batters. Justin McInerney suffered the loss for Clarkson after going four innings and allowing just one run.
The Lakers close out the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday against SUNY Canton starting at 1 p.m.
