Baseball Opens 2011 Season With 20-9 Win Against St. Joseph's

The Oswego State baseball team opened its 2011 season with a 20-9 win over St. Joseph's College in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Friday.  The Lakers pounded out 16 base hits, eight of which were extra bases, and drew 11 walks to wear out the base paths around the diamond.  Andrew Lazzaro had a big day at the plate for Oswego State, as he went 3-for-3, scored four runs and drove in four runs as well.  It marked the first game of the season for both squads.

The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and doubled their margin in the third with only one hit to go ahead 6-0.  Oswego State crossed home plate four more times in the fourth with Ed Charles delivering a two-RBI double into left field for the key hit of the frame.

Dan Maloney and Tyler Baker recorded RBIs as part of a three-run sixth inning, but St. Joseph's got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 13-3.  The Bears tallied four runs in a four-hit seventh inning, as the Lakers now held a 13-7 lead.  However, Scott Buniak ripped a two-RBI double to trigger a five-run frame that put Oswego State ahead 18-7 en route to the Lakers posting a 20-9 win.

Jon Stevens had a solid six-inning outing on the mound for Oswego State scattering seven hits and earning one run, while striking out six to earn the win.  Pat McElduff closed out the game allowing four earned runs on seven hits.  Daniel Contant suffered the loss after giving up eight earned runs in four innings on five hits and seven walks.
