Softball Goes 2-3 After First Two Days of Spring Break Trip

The Oswego State softball team bounced back from a pair of losses on Saturday by posting a 2-1 record on Sunday behind improved pitching and team defense during its Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla.  The Lakers started the season with losses to John Carroll, 17-0 in five innings, and Macalester, 7-0, but defeated Manhattanville, 7-4, and the University of Minnesota at Morris, 5-1, for their first wins of the season.  Sunday's lone loss came against Bethany College of West Virginia in a 5-2 decision.  Oswego State is now 2-3 overall.

The Lakers found themselves in a 4-2 hole at the end of the first inning against Manhattanville, but rallied for five runs in the third inning to post the first win of the season.  Brittany Carbacio and Paige Anderson had solid games at the plate, as Carbacio went 2-for-3 and Anderson went 3-for-4.  Defensively, Morgan Lavner recorded six putouts at third base.  Pitcher Sarah Thayer threw a complete game for the win.

In Sunday's second game against Bethany, both squads were even at two runs apiece after three innings, but Oswego State surrendered a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the sixth in the 5-2 loss.  Sammie Schroeter paced the offense, going 2-for-4, while captain Shannon Baker went 1-for-3 and plated a run.  Beth Jerome scored the other Laker run and played strong defense behind the plate, as she caught for Jess Palmitesso, who tossed a complete game and registered five strikeouts.

Oswego State tallied four runs in the third inning to wrap up the day with a 5-1 win over UM-Morris.  Thayer pitched a one-hit gem, while striking out five batters for her second win of the season.  Sue Schoff was 1-for-1 from the dish with a RBI and a run.  Laura Kahn went 1-for-2 and played strong defense at second base.  Katie Bredin also scored a run after hitting 1-for-3.
