The Oswego State softball team suffered a setback on Friday as it was swept by Brockport, 5-1 and 9-1, at Clark Whited Complex.
Sue Schoff accounted for three of the seven Laker hits in the doubleheader, as she went 3-for-5 with a solo home run in game two. Oswego State (5-16, 1-9 SUNYAC) will try to snap its current skid on Sunday when it travels to Geneseo for a 1 p.m. start. The Golden Eagles improved to 17-7 overall and 3-3 in the league standings.
It was a scoreless game through the first three innings of game one until a lead-off walk got things going for Brockport in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles had one run score before a two-RBI single by Susanna Johnson gave Brockport a 3-0 lead. The home team added two more runs in the fifth after three hits.
Paige Anderson led off the seventh with a single into left field to start an Oswego State rally.
Shannon Baker then reached following an error, and Schoff delivered another single to load the bases with no outs.
Nicole Ouellette drove in the game's lone run with a groundball to the second baseman, whose only play was to first. However, the Lakers were unable to drive in the runners from second and third to keep the rally alive.
All three Oswego State pitchers combined to allow eight hits and five earned runs with
Jess Palmitesso picking up the loss. Jean Farrell earned the win, as she struck out eight, walked three, and gave up four hits.
Brockport put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first, but Schoff cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth when she hit a solo shot to center field to make the score 2-1. The Golden Eagles capitalized on a pair of Laker errors in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead with the key hits being a pair of two-run home runs by Courtney Claflin and Sarah Rosenbarker.
Brockport ended game two in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs with two outs to invoke the mercy rule. Stephanie Greer was the winning pitcher after coming on in relief of Erin Fleming in the top of the third.
