Baseball Drops Series Opener To New Paltz, 6-1

After splitting a doubleheader with SUNYAC rival Cortland on Thursday, the Oswego State baseball team dropped the first game of its three-game set at Loren Campbell Field against New Paltz Saturday, 6-1. The loss dropped the Lakers to 11-12 on the season with a 1-9 SUNYAC record, while New Paltz improved to 13-12 on the year with a 4-5 SUNYAC mark.

Despite pitching a complete game, Laker pitcher Matt Schaper struck out six and walked five, while allowing eight hits in the loss. New Paltz pitcher Andrew Grann picked up the win, pitching 8.1 innings and striking out seven with three walks.

The Hawks struck early, as a ground ball double play drove in the first run of the game during the first inning. Bats would be held silent on both sides until the sixth inning when a bases-loaded single by Matt Kaldon scored Jimmy Briggs and Chris Paulicelli for a 3-0 lead. New Paltz tacked on three more runs with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

The Lakers once again tried to stage a rally in the ninth, as a single to right center by Dan Maloney brought Scott Buniak across the plate to avoid a shutout. The comeback was promptly quelled however, as New Paltz closer Nick Monaco entered the game following the score and recorded the final two outs of the contest.

The Lakers will have two more opportunities against New Paltz in a doubleheader Sunday at noon.
