The Oswego State softball team rallied for an 8-4 win in game two against Nazareth after falling to the Flyers, 6-5, in game one Thursday in Rochester.
Katie Bredin stole the show in the second game of the twinbill, literally, swiping five bases after going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. The Lakers snapped a ten-game skid with the victory, and moved to 6-18 overall, while Nazareth moved to 4-20. Oswego State will travel to Cortland to face the Red Dragons on Friday at 3 p.m. in conference action.
The Lakers struck the first blow in the top of the second of game one when
Nicole Ouellette doubled in
Paige Anderson from first base to take an early 1-0 lead. Flyer pitcher Casey Mathers helped her cause in the bottom of the third when her double drove in Claire Campbell, and later scored herself as Nazareth went ahead 2-1.
The Flyers tacked on two more runs in the fourth before Oswego State put together a four-run fifth inning starting with a double by
Sammie Schroeter.
Brittany Carbacio delivered the key hit for the Lakers when her double brought in Schroeter and Ouellette. Carbacio later scored after a base knock from Dee Apps with the final run of the frame being driven in by Anderson. All four runs scored with two outs to put Oswego State ahead 5-4.
The score stood until the bottom of the sixth when Kailey Ritch hit a solo home run with one out to even the score. Following a pair of walks, Mandy Weakley registered the eventual game-winning hit with a RBI single. The Lakers went down in order with three flyballs to suffer the loss.
Sarah Thayer picked up the loss allowing four earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and three walks over the course of six innings, as Nazareth stranded ten runners during the game. Mathers posted the win recording seven strikeouts and nine hits for five earned runs.
In the nightcap, Oswego State responded with a run in its first at-bat as
Sue Schoff doubled in Apps from second base following a single and a stolen base with two outs. The Lakers put another run on the board in the second when a lead-off walk to Anderson turned into a run. Oswego State had a chance to add more runs, but left the bases loaded.
The Flyers responded with a big inning of their own in the next at-bat by capitalizing on a Laker error with two outs. Nazareth put up four runs in the frame with Kasey Pollot's two-RBI single into center field being the criticial hit. However, Oswego State remained unphased, mounting a two-out rally behind RBI hits by
Laura Kahn and
Bre Meleen to tie the contest in the top of the third at 4-4.
The hits kept coming for the Lakers as Schoff laced a double down the right field line to bring around Carbacio and Apps in the fourth to give Oswego State a 6-4 advantage. Head coach Casey Price's squad tacked on a run in the fifth when Bredin single-handedly manufactured a run by stealing second, third, and home after reaching on a Flyer defensive miscue. The Lakers posted their final run of the game in the top of the seventh when Bredin touched home after an Apps double.
Jessica Palmitesso earned the win, going six innings with one earned run on seven hits, five strikeouts, and a walk. Thayer came on in the seventh after the lead-off batter reached, and struck out the next three Nazareth hitters. Jessica Mangicaro recorded the loss in 4.1 innings of relief by giving up four runs, two of which were unearned.
