Softball Battles No. 12 Cortland In 2-1 and 6-0 Losses

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

The Oswego State softball team had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning of game one for a chance to tie the contest, but was unable to bring her in as the Lakers lost to No. 12-Cortland 2-1 and 6-0 losses on Friday in Cortland.  Oswego State also came up short in game two in a 6-0 decision to fall to 6-20 on the season and 1-11 in the SUNYAC standings.  The victories pushed the Red Dragons to 27-3 overall and 12-0 in the conference.  The Lakers will travel to Geneseo for a league doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Oswego State led off game one with a single by Katie Bredin, and successfully advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Carbacio and a groundball to the right side of the infield by Dee Apps.  Sue Schoff then produced a timely two-out hit into left center to bring in Bredin.  In the bottom half of the inning, Donnalyn Cross got on base after a walk issued by Laker starting pitcher Sarah Thayer.  Cross came in to score after stealing second and third and an error.  Lucia Meola turned another walk into a run as well to put Cortland ahead 2-1.

The Red Dragons threatened again in the second inning after the first two batters reached on walks.  However, Thayer worked out of the jam by inducing two groundballs that resulted in force outs at the plate and recorded a strikeout ,to get out of the frame unscathed.  Thayer settled down after the inning, sitting Cortland down in order in third, fourth, and fifth innings, and gave up just one hit in the sixth.

The Lakers had runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings, but were unable to get the pivotal hit to tie the game.  Oswego State had one last chance in the top of the seventh to tie the game after Paige Anderson doubled to the gap in right center.  The next Laker hitter popped up a bunt attempt for the first out, and Anderson was thrown out at third by the pitcher on a fielder's choice for the second out.  The rally ended with another fielder's choice at second base.

Thayer suffered the loss allowing two runs, one of which was unearned, on two hits and six walks through six innings.  Cortland's Lyndsay Rowell went the distance in the circle, scattering five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, the Red Dragons' Jessica Harman opened the contest with a two-run home run to left center to give Cortland the early edge.  The Red Dragons added another run in the third as a result of aggressive baserunning by Cross forced an Oswego State error.  Cortland tacked on two more runs in the fifth to go ahead 5-0, and scored the final run of the game in the sixth after a solo home run by Beth Lamison.

The Laker hitters struggled during the game generating just two hits to go along with ten strikeouts.  Jessica Palmitesso registered the loss after giving six runs on seven hits and four walks.  Morgan Kuhn and Abby Martin combined to throw the shutout with Kuhn picking up the win.
