The Oswego State softball team had a lead late in game one and posted a rally late in game two, but it was not enough to push the Lakers past Fredonia in 6-4 and 5-2 losses Friday at Laker Softball Field.  Oswego State fell to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the SUNYAC after the decisions, and will host Buffalo State tomorrow at 1 p.m.  The Blue Devils improved to 18-2 and remained unbeaten in the conference at 6-0.

Fredonia took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after RBI doubles by Anne Wasik and Katie Bartkowiak, but the Lakers cut the margin in half in the bottom of the fourth when Shannon Baker's groundball to second with the bases loaded brought in Dee Apps.

The Blue Devils threatened to break the game open in the next frame with the bases loaded and two outs, but pitcher Jessica Palmitesso induced a groundball to end the stanza.  The score stood at 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Apps led off the inning with a single through the left side for Oswego State.  The Lakers then received hits from pinch-hitter Megan Howe, Sue Schoff, and Baker to grab a 4-2 advantage with no outs, but were unable to push any more runs across the plate.

However, Fredonia immediately responded with the lead-off batter reaching after an Oswego State defensive miscue.  Julie Arnold and Rachel Burrows produced RBI base-hits to tie the game before Bartkowiak delivered the knockout blow with a two-RBI single for the eventual game-winning runs, as the Lakers stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh.

Raela Wiley picked up the win for Fredonia after coming on in relief during the sixth inning, while Ashley LaPorta earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning.  Palmitesso received the loss after going the distance with six runs on nine hits, two strikeouts, and seven walks.

The Blue Devils carried their momentum from game one into the nightcap, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead behind four hits in the top of the first inning.  Fredonia added a run in the third after a RBI-single by Lauren Larson, who went 3-for-3 in the game.

Oswego State rallied in its last at-bat after Apps reached on a defensive error.  Paige Anderson then delivered a single into center field, while Nicole Ouellette followed up with a RBI double.  Anderson later crossed home plate after a throwing error on a failed pick-off attempt.  Katie Bredin then delivered an infield single to drive starting pitcher Alyssa Brognano from the game.  LaPorta came in to end the threat with a pair of runners in scoring position.  She then pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the win and earn the save.

Sarah Thayer suffered the loss after scattering 11 hits over seven innings for five runs with five strikeouts and four walks.
