Wrestlers Go 1-2 After Day One At Budd Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Oswego State wrestling team picked up its first win in dual meet competition by defeating Muskingum, 31-17, at the Budd Whitehill Division III National Duals hosted by Lycoming College on Friday.  The Lakers opened competition with a 36-6 loss to Springfield College before defeating Muskingum.  In Oswego State's final match of the day, the Lakers were tied with Williams, 24-24, after the final wrestlers competed, but the Ephs were awarded the final for the win due to three pins.

The Lakers' opening round loss did have a pair of bright spots in back-to-back matches as Omar Santiago (Jr., Huntington, N.Y.) came away with a 1-0 victory and Michael Gentilcore (So., Rochester, N.Y.) battled his way to a 10-5 victory. The Lakers were also pinned just twice in the dual.

In round two, the Lakers were led by pins from Gentilcore in 4:59 and Sam Farfaglia (Fr., Canastota, N.Y.) in 2:41. They also picked up six points with a forfeit issues to Dan Pineda.

The Lakers did need to overcome three pins by Muskingum though. They did that with four other wins on the mat.

Santiago grabbed a 9-2 victory, Brad Mayville (Fr., Ontario, N.Y.) added a 10-2 win, Maxx Stratton ( So., Accord, N.Y.) claimed his match 6-5 and Kyle Sheridan (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up a 4-1 victory.

Round three could not be settled on the scoreboard, instead Williams needed to use tiebreaker criteria to claim the dual 25-24.

Pineda, Justin Patus and Farfaglia all picked up wins by forfeit, while Santiago fought his way to a 5-2 win and Cameron Mills (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) grabbed a 3-1 victory.

However, Williams had three pins and picked up two decisions by just two points to come away with the team win.

Oswego State will wrestle against Trine at 10:30 a.m., and will face Lycoming or King's College at 1:30 p.m.
