BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Oswego State baseball team (5-2) split a doubleheader with Allegheny College (1-3) on Sunday, losing the first game, 3-2, but using a high-powered offensive attack to win the second game by the score of 14-4.
In the first contest, Oswego State got on the scoreboard first on an RBI groundout by
Mike Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) that scored
Ed Charles (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first. The Lakers struck again in the third inning when
Kyle Liner (So., Milford, N.Y.) scored on a sacrifice fly by
John Rauseo (So., Mattituck, N.Y.) to increase the lead to 2-0.
Allegheny knotted the game at two in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on Oswego State starter
James McKenna (Jr., Bohemia, N.Y.). The Gators took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch that scored designated hitter Kyle Davis. The Lakers had a runner on third base in their final at-bat, but were unable to drive in the equalizing run to end the game.
Tim Smith (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) logged the only hit for the Lakers in the game, singling down the left field line in the fourth. McKenna took the loss after allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned) in a complete game.
The Lakers broke out the bats in the second game, scoring 14 runs on 16 hits en route to a 14-4 victory. Allegheny was the first to light up the scoreboard, tallying one run in the bottom of the first. Oswego State answered back in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-RBI triple to left field by Charles that scored
Andrew Lazzaro (Oswego, N.Y.) and
Dan Karleski (Syracuse, N.Y.). Charles then scored on a Stark double down the left field line. Allegheny added two runs in the bottom half of the second, leveling the score at three runs apiece.
From there, Oswego State would score nine unanswered runs. The Lakers picked up the scoring again in the fourth where they plated five runners on four hits, all coming with two outs.
Jordan Giller (Fr., Toronto, Ont., Canada) singled up the middle, plating both Charles and Stark. Giller then scored on a single through the right side by
Mike McMullen (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Brian Hamilton (Liverpool, N.Y.) and
Michael Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y.) added to the Laker run total, scoring on back-to-back walks by Lazzaro and Karleski with the bases loaded to break open the game.
The Lakers tacked on another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field scoring
Scott Buniak (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Oswego State piled on three more runs in the sixth to widen the gap to 12-3. McMullen scored on a single to left field by Karleski, Liner scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Rauseo, and Karleski scored on a groundout to second base by
Matt Capobianco (Kings Park, N.Y.).
The Lakers closed out the game with two more runs in the seventh.
Dylan Parmenter (Bennington, VT) scored on a double to right center by Hamilton, who then was brought around by
Tyler Baker (Hannibal, N.Y.). The Gators would plate one runner in the bottom half of the seventh, ending the night cap in a 14-4 Lakers victory.
Jon Stevens (Chittenango, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Lakers, going five innings allowing six hits and three runs.
Josh Martin (Little Falls, N.Y.) pitched the final two innings for Oswego State, surrendering one hit and one unearned run.
The Lakers take on Vassar in a doubleheader on Monday in Florida starting at 9 a.m.
