OSWEGO, N.Y. – Last week, the Oswego State women's lacrosse team (7-7, 4-3 SUNYAC) owned just one State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win. Three straight conference victories have put the Lakers in control of their own destiny entering Saturday's home game against Oneonta (8-8, 3-4 SUNYAC). The final league showdown is the Oswego State Game of the Week.
The Lakers will host the Red Dragons, having lost 21-9 to Oneonta last season. In 2011, however, the Lakers triumphed 20-11 on their home field against their conference foe. This year's contest pits Oneonta's high-powered offense against Oswego State's vaunted defense.
The Red Dragons boast three 40-goal scorers on an offense averaging 14 goals per game, which is third-best in the conference. The Lakers' offense posts 11.08 goals per contest, which ranks seventh. However, in conference games, both squads see offensive production dip nearly two goals.
On the defensive side of the ball, Oswego State excels in league play. Junior goalie
Nikki Greco (Syracuse, N.Y.) has the second-best save percentage (.518) in the conference, trailing only Cortland's netminder. The Red Dragons have two goalies that split time, but both rank outside the top-ten in conference save percentage.
The Lakers and Red Dragons are both battling for a spot in the postseason, as only five of nine teams advance to the playoffs. Cortland and Fredonia have locked up the top two spots, and Brockport finished 5-3 and is currently third in the standings. Buffalo State, Potsdam and New Paltz have all been eliminated from contention, but New Paltz can still play a huge role in the playoff race.
The Hawks (4-9, 0-7 SUNYAC) match up with the Blue Knights (10-4, 4-3 SUNYAC) on Saturday. Here are the playoff seeds in each possible scenario:
IF Oswego State and Geneseo win:
#3 – Oswego State
#4 – Geneseo
#5 – Brockport
IF Oswego State and New Paltz win:
#3 – Oswego State
#4 – Brockport
#5 – Geneseo
IF Oneonta and Geneseo win:
#3 – Geneseo
#4 – Brockport
#5 – Oneonta
IF Oneonta and New Paltz win:
#3 – Brockport
#4 and #5 – **Several factors play into seeding as Geneseo, Oneonta and Oswego State are 1-1 in head-to-head
As the Lakers know, a win will earn them the No. 3 seed and a date with either Fredonia or Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals.
